A Proven Method When Applying to Law Schools
©2008
When you are looking for law a law school, you might think
that you need only apply to two or three. These two or three
are probably law schools in which you really want to go to
because of economics, physical location, or the reputation of
the school. This is the wrong way to go about applying to
law schools. You should apply to as many as you can
because the chance that you will be picked up by at least one
will be greater. It would be nice if everybody can go to
Harvard or Yale, but the chances of that are very slim.
You should have several safety law schools picked and
should apply to all of. A safety school is a law school that
you feel fairly comfortable that you will be accepted to. This
may take you further away from home than you want to be
or it might relocate you in a state that you really don't want
to be in, but in the end you will meet the goal that you are
trying to reach, which is being admitted into a law school.
The next type of law school that you should look at is called
a par school. The par school is a law school in which you
feel at least 50% competent that you will be admitted into.
These are schools in which you know that your GPA and
your LSAT scores will be high enough to meet the admission
standards.
Don't forget the reach schools. The reach schools are law
schools in which you have little expectations of being
admitted to, but on a long shot you might be able to land an
admission. These schools would be the Ivy League law
schools and law schools in which there is a high number of
reputable graduates such as Cornell or Brown.
When you apply to so many law schools it can be very
expensive. The admissions fees sometimes can range
between $50 and $100. This is a bite that you will have to
take. If you want to make sure that you get into law school
you have to apply for them. You have to spread the wealth
around to as many law schools as you can to have a chance.
Think of it as an investment in your future.
Using this method of choosing a law school you may be
surprised that you will receive two or three admission letters.
Now the choice is up to you. Even one of your long shot
law school admissions to an Ivy League college might come
through for you. Now that you have choices in front of
you, you will be able to pick the location, the law school that
has your economic interest in mind, and the law school that
has the best reputation.
